New Off-Ice Program in January 2017 Supported by RBC Learn-to-Play

Skate Amherstburg is a proud 2016 recipient of an RBC Learn to Play grant! The RBC Learn to Play Project provides grants to local organizations and community groups that are building the physical literacy of Canada’s kids and youth. RBC Learn to Play Project grants are funded by RBC and the Public Health Agency of Canada and delivered by ParticipACTION with support from Canadian Sport for Life. Learn more at

The off-ice program supported by this grant starts on January 23rd, 2017 and will be FREE to all participants as long as they are currently registered with Skate Canada.

Open to all members aged 6 to 24 years of age.

All skaters/ parents will be required to complete an initial survey and a follow-up survey at the completion of the program in order to meet reporting requirements.

Off Ice Program Description

Each week skaters will take part in one of the following classes:

  • Strength Training
  • Creative Dance
  • Zumba
  • Yoga

All classes will be taught by qualified instructors and should not require any additional equipment. Participation in these classes will not only help out with skating skills but also other sports in which your skater may participate.  A well-rounded athlete helps to prevent injuries both on and off the ice.

Strength training

Skaters will be introduced to body weight and low weight exercises designed to build muscles.  Strong core muscles and leg muscles will improve skater’s ability to hold positions on the ice and improve their ability to jump.  Upper body exercises will improve posture and arm position.

Creative dance

Skaters need the ability to interpret music as part of their free skate and dance elements.  Skaters will be introduced to different types of music and dances which will improve their ability to express themselves on the ice and remove some of the self-consciousness experienced by skaters when they perform.


As skaters progress through the StarSkate program the length of their free skates increase from 30 seconds to 4 minutes.  This class will increase skater’s endurance using aerobic dance.


Skaters require flexibility as well as strength.  This class will improve their flexibility while also teaching them to focus and at the same time relax.

Class Schedule:

Intermediates – 4:30 to 5:00

Seniors – 5:30 to 6:00

Juniors – 6:00 to 6:30
